This CWIC-starter event will be looking at the unmet needs of the healthcare sector starting from a  bottom up approach to enable those who are new to the sector the ability to learn more about this complex market and to refresh those who are currently active in the sector. 

This CWIC Starter is championed by Collette Johnson from the CWIC Committee and the Healthcare SIG.

Karl Gibbs - Managing Director, Acticheck

Karl is the Founder and General Manager of Acticheck. He was inspired to create the Acticheck Assure wristband after a discussion with his mother about why there was not a daily checking service that was flexible enough to fit around an active lifestyle and to connect her with friends, family and neighbours when needed. Karl has a wide range of skills gained through a portfolio career including acting and arranging major events. He has also conducted international financial research, designed and overseen the implementation of national IT systems and databases for British Quakers completed an OU MBA.

Peter Jarritt - Deputy Director, NIHR Brain Injury MedTech Co-operative

Peter is currently Deputy Director and technology theme lead for the National Institute for Health, Health Technology Cooperative for Brain Injury. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians as well as a Fellow of IPEM. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Centre for Healthcare Photonics at the Centre for Process Innovation. Peter has more than 20 years’ experience directing and delivering a comprehensive range of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering services at the highest level. Most recently Peter was the Clinical Director and Head of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Notable projects under his leadership were introduction of RFID technology at Addenbrookes to enhance utilization of medical devices in the patient environment and the integration of medical devices into clinical information systems in an e-hospital programme. Peter’s other Career highlights includes Chief Executive of Northern Ireland Regional Medical Physics Agency. He also served as President of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) promoting the use of Physics and Engineering for patient benefit at national and international level.

Ali Nicholl - Head of Engagement, Iotics

Ali is the Head of Engagement at Iotic, working across customers, partners and Iotic Ecosystem. Ali is focused on the co-creation of transformative services and solutions, that meet genuine business challenges today and are future flexible for as yet undefined futures. Leading the Sales and Marketing activity at Iotic, Ali is passionate about enabling and empowering individuals and organisations with Digital Twins and the secure interoperability they enable. Amy Webb noted that “The future doesn’t simply arrive fully formed overnight, but emerges step by step”. The vast potential that can be unlocked by enabling things, systems and individuals to share, discover and interact with one another must be married to clear understanding of business benefits and the clarity that those first steps can be taken with confidence.

Mike Pallett - CEO, Cupris

Mike spent the first five years of his career working in Investment Banking, most recently with JP Morgan, before quitting with the aim of making a positive difference to other people’s lives. Mike started working with Cupris as an intern whilst studying for his MBA at London Business School. Shortly after graduating he was made CEO and has led the growth of the company through product development, multiple funding rounds, clinical trials and now in preparation of launch across Europe.

Russell Pearson - Project Manager, NIHR Enteric HTC

Dr Russell Pearson is Enteric HTC Project Manager. Russell holds a PhD in Bionanotechnology and Molecular Self-Assembly from the University of Sheffield and a M.Eng. in Biomaterials Science and Tissue Engineering from the same institution. Prior to Enteric HTC, he worked for MHRA devices division focussing on post-market surveillance and technical assessment of clinical investigation applications. Russell has also been involved with MedTech regulatory activities in the SME sector. His principal focus is on maximising the effectiveness in our portfolio of existing projects with our clinical, academic and industrial partners and working on the introduction of upcoming innovation opportunities within GI medicine.

Neil Simrick - Technology Transfer Business Manager , NIHR Cardiovascular HTC

Dr Neil Simrick completed an MSci Physics degree at Royal Holloway, University of London, and gained his PhD from Imperial College London in a Materials Science Engineering field. Dr Simrick then joined a Harvard University spin-off company as employee number three, where he progressed to Principal Scientist in the company formerly located in Boston, MA, U.S., working as an entrepreneurial scientist. In November 2016, Dr. Simrick joined the NIHR Cardiovascular HTC as ‘Technology Transfer Business Manager’, facilitating the implementation of cardiovascular MedTech.

Harpreet Sood - Associate Chief Clinical Information Officer, NHS

Dr Harpreet Sood is the Associate Chief Clinical Information Officer (CCIO) at NHS England and is a practicing NHS Doctor. Harpreet was formerly Senior Fellow to the CEO of NHS England where his portfolio of work included the launch and implementation of the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme, innovation and technology policy and leading on the Wachter Review, which focused on digital health across the NHS. As Associate CCIO, Harpreet will be involved with implementing the recommendations from the Wachter Review including the launch of the NHS Digital Academy. Harpreet sits on the NHS Prevention Board, Advisory Board for Digital Health London and is Vice Chair of the British Computer Society Health Committee.

Peter Ferguson - Director of Connected Health, Capgemini UK plc

Michael Morgan-Curran - CEO, Asclepius MedTech Ltd

Michael has a successful track-record in ethical pharmaceuticals, medical technologies and digital therapeutics. Working with some of the world’s best-known pharmaceutical, life science, medical device, telecoms and research organisations across EMEA, US and Latam, he has built and led teams accountable for market intelligence, strategy, marketing and commercialisation, product design, regulation and market authorisation, pharmacovigilance, clinical trial development, clinical effectiveness and health economics.

As CEO of start-up Asclepius MedTech Ltd; he and his team are building a platform for use in pre- and post-operative surgical assessment to support clinicians and surgical teams ameliorate shared decision-making and stratify patient care.

Daniel Nickalls - Consultant, TTP plc

Daniel is a TTP project leader focussed on decentralized healthcare solutions including the detection and treatment of chronic conditions at home. These projects cover the entire development lifecycle, from early-stage ideation and opportunity validation, through proof-of-concept development, to regulated device development for large-scale manufacture. Daniel particularly enjoys combining engineering insights, rigorous human-centred design and thorough business case validation to realise effective solutions.

Laurence Weir - Freelance, Unaffiliated

Since graduating in Engineering from Cambridge University in 2006, Laurence has worked for Broadcom, Cambridge Mechatronics, Illumina and PA Consulting, and Plextek Services Ltd. Due to the range of sectors Laurence has worked in, from smartphone technology to DNA sequencing, he has an appreciation for the different skills and expertise required to deliver multi-disciplinary engineering projects, as well as the applicable regulatory environments that exist. His experience in business development is coupled with technology leadership on projects and practical engineering delivery.

Mick Withers - SVP Commercial Business Development, Plextek

Involved in Technology consulting around Cambridge for the last 34 years, Previous roles include Managing Director at Sagentia, as well as a couple of stints at TTP, and 5 years helping TeraView transition from a startup to a product company. Now I am charged with helping Plextek diversify its service offering into the Commercial (i.e. non-defence) space.
