The Evolution and Future of Digital Radio

Brought to you by Cambridge Wireless

Digital radio services were first launched nearly 20 years ago using the Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) system. In the UK there are 25 national radio services and around 200 local and regional digital radio services, operating alongside services.

Registration for this event is now closed.

About the event

Some digital radio services “simulcast” their analogue counterparts, at the same time, due to efficiencies of newer technology, digital radio can offer a significantly increased range of services than is possible with analogue. Whereas digital television services have now completely replaced their analogue equivalents, in a process called digital switchover, the range and quality of services has improved for all viewers, however, no such process has yet been formally announced for digital radio.

This event will focus on the years since the launch of digital radio, improvements to the original DAB system have been standardised to introduce a variant known as DAB+ which offers more efficient audio source coding, and at the same time, other digital radio systems have appeared (such as DRM and DRM+) addressing differing needs. Many radio stations are now ‘broadcasting’ to listeners via the internet. The entire digital radio landscape has changed so what does the future hold?

Technology, Ecosystem and the Re-definition of Radio; Pablo Fraile, Head of Product Marketing, Broadcast, Connected and Hybrid Products, Frontier Silicon

In recent years new technologies have emerged in the lives of radio listeners – digital content delivery,
user experiences in their smart devices, home and car connectivity. These are transforming what radio
means to them, and so it should for the industry. To thrive in this new environment, it is essential to
embrace new technologies but also to keep in perspective the intense cultural, economic and political
