About the event

What are IoT and 5G? Are they one of the same thing? This event aims to inform and offer a view on IoT and 5G technologies discussing the motivations, applications, technical challenges and commercial status of these emerging wireless technologies.

Long Term Evolution (LTE), or 4G, is the fastest growing mobile communication technology ever and the technology of choice for the majority of network operators worldwide, providing mobile broadband data and high-speed internet access to their subscriber base. Although enhancements to the technology are evident through the evolving naming conventions, including, LTE Advanced and LTE Advanced Pro., the next revolution in wireless communications is speeding onto the horizon.

This one-day seminar will briefly touch on the latest LTE developments, focusing on how these build towards a converging world of wireless communications involving the Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G next generation mobile networks.

Some IoT technologies are well established, yet the explosion in new applications is firmly driving a rapid increase in the number of devices that will connect wirelessly using IoT. This seminar will explore the world of available and emerging IoT technologies, driven by applications that have increasingly complex requirements. In focus will be established, yet still evolving technologies, e.g. Bluetooth, WLAN, Zigbee and Z-wave. Meet the newer players, including, LoRaWAN, and Narrow-Band IoT (NB-IoT), to name a few.

'5G' aims to address a multitude of requirements, including some attributed to IoT. The need to realise innovative technologies for 5G, has seen significant investment in research projects around the world, potentially yielding pre-commercial trials during 2017. This part of the seminar will provide an overview of the primary requirements, standardisation timelines and a view on the increasing commercial focus. Additionally, some of the technical challenges and concepts with the new radio air interface will be discussed, including “Massive MIMO”; wide bandwidths and high frequencies; and innovative approaches to certification and production testing.

The day will culminate in key speakers from industry providing their own visions on the impacts of 5G and IoT.

Continuing the series of successful free one-day technical seminars, Rohde & Schwarz invites you to a day focused on the future of wireless communications.

This seminar is aimed at professionals who want to gain a better understanding of the concepts and technologies involved in the next generation of wireless communications. The day will include technology demonstration zones, providing hands on experience and assistance from our experts. The event has the backing of the IET and counts towards your Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
