Summary
We’re currently a growing team unified by our goal to deliver level 5 autonomy, trialling level 4 in a major London project by 2019. We’re solving interesting and difficult problems to service millions of people daily. With experienced founders, world-class scientists and professor supervision, our team is accelerating advanced research learning and applying in the real world. Having recently secured significant funding, we’re looking for energetic, driven, humble people with diverse backgrounds.
About the role
You’ll be part of the Simulation team, creating props and environments that will be used to test and train the car in controlled conditions before we take it into the real world. Be ready to learn a new way of thinking about visual quality: you’ll have to craft your scenes for machines, not humans, so some things need to be done differently.
- You’ll be doing a bit of everything: model and texture props, and can also do a little rigging and animation
- You might be asked to make 100 bought-in or generated models to be more consistent, and it’s up to you whether to do it by hand, or script it - on your own or with help from a developer
- You’ll look at 3D environments reconstructed from real-world scans/recordings, and immediately see what problems they might have
- Initially, you may be the only artist in a team that’s mostly software developers, in a company that’s mostly AI researchers. We are growing fast so we’ll need your help shaping the team and the way we do things
A typical day might look like this:
- Shop for some street furniture meshes on Turbosquid
- Make the meshes consistent and reduce poly counts so they can be spawned in a scene interchangeably
- Re-texture them all to increase the number of variations
- Watch a recording of a real-life pedestrian, and make an animation of the same action
- Stay for pizza and drinks at the weekly board games night
Requirements
Your experience
- Perhaps you’ve spent some time in the games or VFX industries, and you’re looking for a change from the cycle of continual deadline crunching
- We value people for the work they do, not the hours they spend in the office. We pay based on talent and the value you contribute to the business, not the Metacritic score of your last game
- You have strong experience in 3ds Max or Maya, amongst others
- As a visually creative person in a startup, you’re on the lookout for other ways you can apply your skills to help the business, outside of your main work
