Pye can be considered as one of the founding companies of the Cambridge Phenomenon. Bob Bates and Roger Crabtree of the Pye History Trust will share the story of how Pye grew from a start-up in a garden shed in Cambridge in 1896 until it became one of the leading UK technology companies. At its peak in 1966 it had more than 70 UK companies and around 15 overseas companies, employing over 30,000 staff world-wide, around half in East Anglia and 7,000 in the Cambridge area.
The talk will describe some of the key people who drove the company and give an overview of the innovative technologies and products that the company produced. Finally, the fall of the company and how it was taken over will be presented.
Attendees will be able to view the permanent exhibition of Pye Products from 1896 to 1970 and also a special exhibition celebrating the BBC’s centenary with a unique collection of early Pye radios from 1922 to 1932 on loan to the museum by a private collector.
The event will take place at The Pye Building at the Cambridge Museum of Technology, Cambridge on the afternoon of Friday 24th February.
