Linux Administrator

Summary

We are looking for a Linux Administrator to join our team on a fixed-term basis for 2-years. You will provide support for the DevOps Infrastructure team alongside installing, supporting and maintaining servers or other computer systems, planning for and responding to service outages and other problems in line with the agreed levels of service to the business.

We are looking for a Linux Administrator to join our team on a fixed-term basis for 2-years. 

As a Linux Administrator you will provide support for the DevOps Infrastructure team alongside installing, supporting and maintaining servers or other computer systems, planning for and responding to service outages and other problems in line with the agreed levels of service to the business.

Other duties may include some project management for systems-related projects, and helping to develop and implement Infrastructure improvements in line with business strategy, business benefits sought, technology advancements, capacity and security imperatives.   You will be expected to work with existing teams providing data analysis and feedback on issues, trends and actions, and ensuring that actions are prioritised and progressed through robust root-cause analysis, corrective and preventative action, to sustainable and cost-effective solutions.   You will also provide a valuable interface with contracted resource, suppliers and employees alike providing timely, accurate and value-added feedback on the status and progress of actions and issues.

Key Responsibilities

You will work closely with the DevOps Infrastructure team in the following activities:

  • Day to day management and prioritisation of escalated Service Desk activities.
  • Prioritising 3rd line support activities to underpin incident and problem management.
  • Balancing the differing requirements of R&D and Enterprise computing as part of a Global organisation.
  • ITIL based functions including: Incident management – managing incidents interrupting normal business functions in an efficient and effective manner; Problem management – root cause analysis and putting in place solutions to problems to prevent further incidents; Change management – ensuring controlled changes to Infrastructure to prevent unexpected incidents; 
    Availability management – managing the availability of DevOps services to agreed service levels; Capacity management – feeding an understanding of capacity issues into strategic growth/improvement of DevOps infrastructure.
  • Support the DevOps Infrastructure - Team Leader in agreeing appropriate service levels with the business.
  • Delivery of DevOps Infrastructure projects using own and external resources.
  • Management of external IS service providers to underpin service levels.
Responsibilities might also include:  
  • Analyzing system logs and identifying potential issues with computer systems. 
  • Introducing and integrating new technologies into existing infrastructure. 
  • Performing routine audits of systems and software. 
  • Ensuring appropriate backup system policies are in place and working. 
  • Applying operating system updates, patches, and configuration changes. 
  • Installing and configuring new hardware and software. 
  • Adding, removing, or updating user account information, resetting passwords, etc. 
  • Answering technical queries. 
  • Support for network and system security. 
  • Support for documenting the configuration of the system. 
  • Troubleshooting any reported problems. 
  • System performance tuning. 
  • Ensuring that the network infrastructure is up and running. 
  • Supporting local, home and remote users.

Major challenges of the role: 
  • Primary responsibility will be to maintain and enhance server management. 
  • Modernize our core infrastructure to a Standardized and Rationalized model.
  • To help retain focus on supporting and improving customer liaisons.

Skills Knowledge and Expertise

Required skills and experience: 
  • Proven experience in a Windows & Linux-based Server role, covering Hardware and Software.
  • A highly motivated individual with strong initiative and drive to achieve.
  • Practical, hands-on style - happy to roll his/her sleeves up and help us achieve.
Desired skills and experience: 
  • Preferably holds a recognised professional qualification or educated to degree level.
  • Experience in Windows Server operating systems, Exchange Server, Databases, Linux platforms Red Hat/Ubuntu, Scripting languages, NetApp Filers, SAN/NAS Storage including NetApp Storage systems. You will also have experience in TCP/IP, LDAP, NIS, Network Installations and LAN/WAN Knowledge. 
  • Articulate and capable communicator with team-working skills.
  • Knowledge and experience of best practice in this field.
  • Familiarity with distributed compute resource management tools.
