MediaTek is a fabless semiconductor company, which is another way of saying we design chips for electronic devices that our partners manufacture.

We design cutting-edge system-on-chip (SoC) solutions for cellular handsets and tablet devices; fixed and wireless connectivity; high-definition TV; optical storage and DVD and Blu-ray products.

MediaTek is headquartered in Taiwan and has sales and research subsidiaries in mainland China, Singapore, India, U.S., Japan, South Korea, Denmark, the UK, Sweden and Dubai. Our R&D centre in Cambourne (near Cambridge) develops smartphone SW and cellular system technology, and our R&D centre in Kent develops RF technology. MTK Wireless Ltd is the UK operation of MediaTek Inc. In the UK, we have two R&D centers – both working on technology for our future SoC wireless chipsets. MediaTek has cumulatively shipped well over 2.5Bn cellular chipsets since entering the cellular market segment less than a decade ago. MediaTek’s “total solution” turnkey approach, and insatiable appetite for excellence in modem solutions, has enabled our customers to successfully deploy MediaTek powered handsets in over 150 countries worldwide. Most recently, our 3G chipsets have been at the forefront of enabling the democratization of smartphones for the mass market. In addition to cellular chipsets, MediaTek has developed leading edge wireless connectivity technology, including Wi-Fi, BT GPS and NFC.    

MediaTek in the UK

MediaTek has two sites in the UK contributing to the companies development of wireless handset technology -

• The R&D site in Cambourne: the Cambridge team focuses on Protocol Stack and Multimedia software development and systems-level development and test.
• The R&D site in West Malling, Kent: the Kent team develop RF technology, including multimode cellular transceivers.
