Ethernet is 40!

Yet another tech anniversary, we recently celebrated 40 years since the first mobile phone call made by Dr Martin Cooper of Motorola, well here’s another 40th, this time it’s Ethernet!

Clearly a technology such as Ethernet isn’t invented in a single day however the first mention of the word “Ethernet” was in a memo, written by Bob Metcalfe on 22nd May 1973.

Ethernet started life as a shared media LAN technology however over the last 10 years it’s evolved from LAN to WAN and nowadays it’s a Global Area Networking technology enabled by Carrier Ethernet as championed by the MEF: http://metroethernetforum.org.
