The Mobile Networks SIG focuses on understanding current and future trends and challenges for terrestrial mobile infrastructure. This group considers the tradeoffs between spectrum, technology and topology options in delivering sustainable mobile infrastructure solutions that meet the growing expectations of users of mobile wireless services.

As a group, we aim to cover:

  • Existing and future technology trends for mobile infrastructure
  • The impact of virtualisation and cloudification
  • Network topology considerations including, the role of small cells and shared infrastructure solutions
  • Public mobile infrastructure with wide geographic areas and more localised, private network solutions
  • Mobile networks based on all relevant standards including 3GPP, Wi-Fi and PMR.
  • Spectrum and regulatory policy related to mobile infrastructure
  • The practicalities and aesthetics of deploying mobile infrastructure and key supporting elements
  • Emerging business models for the mobile industry including both trends in revenue streams and the impact of infrastructure changes on network CAPEX and OPEX
  • Sustainability from environmental, economic and social dimensions and the interplay between these
  • The interactions between terrestrial mobile networks and interconnected networks including but not limited to non-terrestrial networks, the internet and others
  • The challenges and opportunities of mobile infrastructure deployment and evolution in both green field and brown field scenarios
